Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Kathmandu!

When you fly into Kathmandu, you’ll be able to see the valley, the Himalayas, and the terraced fields below. After clearing customs, a representative will meet you outside the airport and assist you in navigating the narrow, winding streets of Kathmandu to your hotel.

After you’ve settled in, go exploring in the city. Kathmandu Durbar Square is a good place to start your exploration, as it leads you through narrow alleyways teeming with small shops, ancient temples, and local restaurants. Swayambhunath, the white stupa rising above the valley, is a great place to stretch your legs and watch the sunset over the valley.

In the evening, the tourist district of Thamel is a good place to get your first meal, with a variety of restaurants serving both Western and Nepali cuisine.

Day 2: Drive from Kathmandu to Jarsing Pauwa, Trek to Nagarkot

Meet your trekking guide in Kathmandu after breakfast and take a Jeep out to the Kathmandu Valley’s rim. Then, proceed to Jarsing Pauwa to begin your trek along the Kathmandu Valley rim. Explore well-known and lesser-known sites and take in the breathtaking mountain views.

Trek up to Nagarkot at night. This mountain getaway town, perched on the rim of the Kathmandu Valley, offers views of the Himalayas to the north and a sprawling landscape of rural scenery, including terraced fields and farmhouses.

Trekking time: 2 hours

Day 3: Trek from Nagarkot to Dhulikhel

Before packing your bags and heading out along the ridgeline to the southeast of Nagarkot, enjoy breakfast with a view. Today, you’ll travel through community forests and open landscapes with small villages that rely on the forest for their daily needs as well as farming and livestock. This is a fantastic opportunity to get up close and personal with the people of the villages. It is very different from Kathmandu, which is only a short distance away but a world away in terms of lifestyle.

Time spent trekking: 7 hours

Day 4: Trek from Dhulikhel to Namo Buddha

You’ll hike to Namo Buddha this morning, which is only a few hours away. Namo Buddha is located 25 miles (40 kilometers) outside of Kathmandu’s hustle and bustle. The tour takes you to the Buddhist pilgrimage site of Panauti in the Kavre District. The Thrangu Tashi Yangtse monastery, where young monks study, is the main attraction of your Namo Buddha tour.

Time spent trekking: 3-4 hours (11 km)

Day 5: Trek from Namo Buddha to Khopasi, Drive to Kathmandu

After breakfast in a beautiful setting overlooking the mountains, spend the morning learning about Tamang Buddhist culture and how it differs from Tibetan Buddhism. A short walk down the hillside will take you to Namo Buddha’s small stupa. This stupa commemorates Siddhartha Gautam’s selfless act of offering his body to a hungry tigress, which is said to have contributed to his attainment of enlightenment and, eventually, Buddhahood. Before climbing a short distance up to the newly built Tibetan Buddhist monastery perched on the hilltop above the Stupa, learn about its significance and place in local Tamang culture.

You’ll continue through fields and orchards to the quiet village of Balthali, stopping for a picnic lunch along the way. Then you’ll proceed to the village of Khopasi. We have amazing views of the mountains from here, and we can enjoy the charm of village life—even though it’s a steep hike back down into the village after dropping your pack at the hotel, it’s well worth the effort.

After exploring Khopasi and taking in your final panoramic views of the Himalayas, you can swap your trekking boots for the four wheels of a car as you return to Kathmandu.

5 hours of walking

Day 6: Depart Kathmandu

It’s time to say good-bye to Nepal. Enjoy your final moments in Kathmandu by having breakfast in a café, taking a final stroll through the narrow alleys and temples, and doing some last-minute souvenir shopping. A driver will meet you at your hotel and transport you to the airport for your return flight home. It’s best to arrive at the airport at least two hours before your flight.
